In the Kolan Hospital Group Sleep Disorders Clinic, current diagnosis and treatment practices are carried out with a multidisciplinary approach for the sleep problems together with the branches of Neurology, Chest Diseases, Ear Nose and Throat.
The sleep period covers the period of daily rhythm, which we call night, when all the activities of the body slow down and decrease. When the body gets tired in the evening, its physical functions begin to decrease and it is ready for sleep, which will begin after a few hours. The sleep period is the period when the tired, worn tissues are renewed and repaired. Therefore, sufficient breathing and oxygen are needed.
Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is when breathing stops for at least 10 seconds and this repeats 5 or more times per hour. This is followed by arousal, which the patient cannot notice for a short time. Sleeping with sleep and waking causes the body to get up tired without rest.
Failure to absorb oxygen during the cessation of breathing affects the whole organism, especially the brain. Due to the excessive work of the respiratory muscles, the patient wakes up both tired and with a poor concentration. Daily activity quality decreases. The patient sleeps whenever possible. Failure, unhappiness, boredom, and accidents tend to increase due to decreased ability to make decisions and resolve, unable to concentrate. If there are cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, lung diseases, it starts to get worse, otherwise ground for them will start.
Snoring is the practice of breathing in sleep in a loud or loud way. There is usually apnea with it. Whether snoring or apnea, the cause is a narrowing or congestion occurring anywhere on the path where pale air enters and exits. The most important reason for this occlusion is the nose. The most common cause of nasal obstruction is the curvature of the bone and cartilage structure (septum deviation) that divides the nasal cavity in two. In cases of throat and palate (such as small tongue sagging), they can cause apnea and snoring. Thickening in the neck area and tongue due to excess weight gain may also cause snoring.
Polysomnography (sleep test) is the most important diagnostic method in which the patient is hospitalized overnight and the respiratory, cardiovascular and brain functions are evaluated and the average number of breaths per hour is determined.
