WHAT IS CLAUSTROPHOBIA?

Some people get bored and overwhelmed when they spend a long time indoors. Claustrophobia is a much more advanced version of this condition. When a person stays in a closed place, he goes under intense stress.

He becomes short of breath, excited, sweats, may have panic attacks and nervous breakdowns. Vomiting and fainting sensation may occur. This is a psychological disorder.

Claustrophobia is, as its name suggests, a phobia. The person lives with the fear that he may stay in a closed area at any time. Every time he gets in the elevator, every time he enters the toilet, the question of whether I can stay locked here haunts his mind.

HOW IS CLAUSTROPHOBIA UNDERSTOOD?

You can tell if a person has claustrophobia or not by looking at their movements. If a person you meet in an elevator is breathing deeply, unable to stay calm, and can’t wait to get off as soon as possible, this person probably has claustrophobia.

Some people who travel on public transport to and from work every day seem quite anxious. They travel close to the gate, impatient to reach the stop where they will land for a moment.

They worry that in case of any malfunction, the door cannot be opened and they will not be able to get out.  When they enter a tunnel while traveling, they worry that they will be trapped in the tunnel. So they can’t wait to get out of the tunnel as soon as possible.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT OF CLAUSTROPHOBIA ACHIEVED?

Individuals with claustrophobia should stay away from areas that trigger their illness as much as possible. Instead of going to close distances by car or public transport, you can go on foot or by bicycle. Walking and cycling are also very beneficial for health.

If the high floor is not to be reached, stairs can be used instead of using the elevator. Such situations may provide a temporary solution, but psychotherapy is essential to get rid of claustrophobia. The use of medication is also part of the treatment.

When the person enters indoor environments, he should direct the focus to different places; Activities such as reading books, listening to music and radio programs, watching videos and movies from a mobile phone or tablet will make the person forget that they are in a closed environment.

One of the misunderstood treatment methods is to address the disease. In other words, deliberately imprisoning a person in a closed environment is a very wrong behavior and instead of curing the disease, it makes it worse.
